Uber’s first cheque made careers — the ones who “watched” got nothing

The angels who backed Uber’s first round turned small cheques into fortunes. The ones who wanted to watch it a little longer got nothing. The signal was there — the window wasn’t.

Illustrative read — these are teaching numbers, not a live score.

TL;DR — Being right about a company is worth nothing if you’re right a month late. The best early rounds are oversubscribed before they ever reach your inbox, and the difference between a career-making entry and a “we passed” story is usually days, not judgement. Here’s how to be in the room while the round is still open.

Uber’s earliest backers put in small cheques and saw them compound into some of the best returns in venture. In hindsight the signal was obvious — a product people re-opened constantly, in a market the size of every city on earth. But hindsight was available to everyone. The entry was not.

Verdict Insight™

Most investors think their edge is judgement. For the best deals, the binding constraint is timing. By the time a hot round is written up somewhere you read, the allocation is spoken for, and you’re left admiring a company you can no longer buy. The pass that hurts isn’t the one you got wrong — it’s the one you were still “watching” when it closed.

What separates the angels who got in from the ones who didn’t wasn’t a better thesis about ride-sharing. It was proximity to the moment the founder hit the milestone that made the round real — and the nerve to move on it before the consensus formed.

How to read it on your own deals

Decide your criteria in advance, then wire yourself to the signal, not the news. When a founder who already fits your mandate hits the milestone you care about, you want to hear it that day — not when a newsletter tells you the round is done. Speed only helps if the homework is already behind you.

Run it by hand — or let a skill run it for you

You can do this by hand — set your criteria, watch your list. When you want the alert to come to you, I’ve packaged it into a free Claude skill: Signal alerts watch the founders who fit your mandate and ping you the moment one moves.
