TL;DR — A pitch you’re defending is a pitch you’re losing. The founders who win the room walk in already knowing the objection and having answered it — so the meeting builds momentum instead of testing them. Drew Houston did it with a three-minute video. Here’s how to do it with any investor.
Struggling to get meetings for Dropbox, Houston made a short demo that showed the product working and, more importantly, pre-empted the obvious objection — “why not just use a USB drive or existing tools?” — before anyone could say it. It drew a wave of interest that a cold pitch never would have.
Verdict Insight™
Most founders prepare to describe their company. The founders who win prepare to answer the specific person across the table — because every investor has one objection that decides the meeting, and it’s usually predictable. Answer it before it’s asked and you’re building; wait for it and you’re defending.
Houston didn’t have a better product than everyone who couldn’t get a meeting. He had done the work of knowing exactly what the room would push on, and putting the answer on screen first. That’s preparation doing the job charisma gets credit for.
How to read it on your own raise
Before each meeting, write the one objection this particular investor will raise — their thesis, their portfolio, their scars all point to it — and open with the answer, not the origin story. Know the questions before you sit down, and the meeting stops being a test you might fail.
Run it by hand — or let a skill run it for you
You can do this yourself — research the investor, script the answer. When you want the brief built for you, I’ve packaged it into a free Claude skill: a Call Brief™ that tells you the questions this investor will ask and helps you answer them before you sit down.
